BMG, it's time for "Elvis' Greatest Hits" on DVD!

Many fans have contacted EIN in 2004 asking why BMG doesn't release an Elvis' Greatest Hits DVD.

While there are obvious problems (principally a lack of visual material for most songs and radically different types of visual material for what is available), these should only be logistical problems which can be overcome using today's technology.

EIN has commented before on Elvis' lack of sales firepower compared to numerous other "oldies" or "back catalog" acts. A definitive Elvis greatest hits disc should go a long way towards changing this situation.

Using Australian results as one indicator the following picture emerges around Platinum level certification (it is reasonably representative of what is happening elsewhere):

Hell Freezes Over The Eagles (Px15)

One Night Only Bee Gees (Px7)

Michael Jackson #1's (Px5)

Black & White Night Roy Orbison (Px5)

Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits (Px4)

One Voice: The Greatest Clips John Farnham (Px4)

The '68 Comeback Special Elvis (Px1)

Aloha From Hawaii Elvis (Px1)

EIN urges BMG to develop a definitive Elvis' greatest hits DVD.

Using a mix of existing audio-visual Elvis material (eg. Jailhouse Rock; Return To Sender) and contemporary video clips (in the A Little Less Conversation vain), a first-rate production could be established as the perennial best selling Elvis DVD...in the same way as other record companies have established the abovementioned titles.

The scarcity of appropriate high quality audio-visual Elvis material means the compilation will not be cheap...but it would be a fitting tribute and sound investment in the world's greatest recording artist!

Release of a "greatest hits" DVD package would be consistent with comments made by Ernst Jorgensen that the broader market is more interested in the well known hits rather than secondary hits.

EIN welcomes your comments on this issue. All comments will be passed on to BMG.
