'Elvis At Stax: 40th Anniversary' Legacy Final Details: Celebrating the 40th Anniv of Elvis' STAX studios sessions SONY is releasing a 3 CD 'Elvis At Stax: 40th Anniversary' complete set plus a "Elvis At Stax: 40th Anniv: Best Of" 1CD version. They are both out on Aug 6, 2013. Final Details released today by SONY.
... The last major studio sessions in the career of Elvis Presley have finally been gathered together for the first time in one comprehensive package as 'ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION' bristles with energy and dynamism. The deluxe 3-CD box set, a 40th anniversary chronicle of a dozen nights that Presley spent at Stax Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis in July and Dec 1973, will be released worldwide August 6.
Released simultaneously will be a single CD of highlights from the box set simply titled ELVIS AT STAX, and a 180-gram, double-vinyl LP.
The official website notes 'ELVIS AT STAX' bristles with energy and dynamism. The proof is in the six consecutive singles that the Stax sessions produced, all of which skirted the Top 40 from 1973 to 1975. In effect, they rivaled some of the hottest streaks that Presley had charted a decade earlier. The Stax singles still resonate today: |
 |
•"Raised On Rock" b/w "For Ol’ Time Sake" (Hot 100 #41, country #42);
•"I’ve Got A Thing About You Baby" b/w "Take Good Care Of Her" (Hot 100 #39, country #4);
•"Promised Land" b/w "It’s Midnight" (Hot 100 #14, country #9);
•"If You Talk In Your Sleep" b/w "Help Me" (Hot 100 #17, country #6);
•"My Boy" b/w "Thinking About You" (Hot 100 #20, country #14);
•"Mr. Songman" (B-side of "T-R-O-U-B-L-E," Hot 100 #35, country #11).
(EIN note - How odd that Elvis "skirting the Top 40" is a sign of dynamism! Surely RCA would have hoped that Elvis would get into the Top Ten after the success of 'Aloha'?)
Ernst Jørgensen has long been concerned with doing justice to the Stax sessions, which were never acknowledged by the artist's record label RCA as a unified whole. Instead, as with most of Presley's studio work in his second decade as a recording artist, the tracks were scattered onto LPs and intermingled with material recorded in Nashville and Hollywood. The bulk of the Stax cuts showed up on Raised On Rock/For Ol’ Times Sake (1973), Good Times (1974), and Promised Land (1975). For ELVIS AT STAX, many of the outtakes originated on the reissues of those three albums on the FTD label. ELVIS AT STAX was produced by Jørgensen, Semon, and Rob Santos of Legacy A&R.
Taking up the cause for ELVIS AT STAX is another scholar and aficionado of the artist, award-winning resident Memphis journalist Robert Gordon, who has written an in-depth, day-by-day liner notes essay for the box set.
|
 |
(EIN Note - It will be fascinating to see whether Robert Gordon includes the mainly despondent stories from Elvis' acquaintances at the STAX sessions.)
Elvis spent 12 days at Stax in 1973 (July 21-25 and December 10-16), and the rollercoaster ride of those sessions is meticulously detailed in Gordon’s liner notes. ELVIS AT STAX neatly compartmentalizes the results:
•Disc 1: The R&B and Country Sessions – The Outtakes: 17 tracks
•Disc 2: Part 1 – The Pop Sessions – The Outtakes: 10 tracks
•Disc 2: Part 2 – The July 1973 Masters: four single sides and six album tracks, and
•Disc 3: The December 1973 Masters: seven single sides and 11 album tracks.

'Aloha From Hawaii' 40th Anniversary release CD Review: There is no doubt that most people reading this review will know Elvis’ phenomenal Aloha From Hawaii' concert inside out. Every fan will know the TV broadcast, most fans will have bought the album several times, a fair number will have also bought the "Alternate Aloha" rehearsal and a few will have seen the original broadcast on TV back in 1973.
We all know this classic record-breaking concert so well. Dressed in his stunning "American-Eagle" jumpsuit, tanned, slim and Adonis-like, Elvis was truly at the peak of his later career.
But with no "new" material to be offered on this Legacy 40th Anniversary re-release do the audio re-masters and packaging with 24 page booklet create a release worth of such a magnificent event.
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley takes a good look at this all-important 40th Anniversary release and discovers the Good and the Bad..

"Aloha" New Legacy Release Sound Samples: Posted on the SONY Legacy website are three sound samples from the new up-coming Legacy Release. And they sound very fine indeed compared to the old 1988 'Alternate Aloha 'release.
'A Big Hunk O' Love' newly remixed Rehearsal show
'Suspicious Minds' newly remixed Rehearsal show
'Blue Hawaii' newly remaster from the after-show additions. Unfortunately here Elvis sounds as tired as ever, not surprising since they dragged him back after the biggest performance of his life to record extra fluff

'3000 South Paradise Road' FTD CD Review: A two-CD release with 16-page booklet this FTD takes a close look at Elvis’ engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in August of 1972.
The main disc is the Dinner Show from August 12, 1972 and the second disc is culled from the rehearsals on August 4th, the date of the opening of the engagement.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton. August 1972 was a great period with Elvis out of those typical jumpsuits and looking cool in his two-piece suits. Created by true Elvis fans for Elvis collectors - and with the fabulous audio remaster of the fine August 12 Dinner Show - this is what the FTD label is all about.

- 'Stay Away, Joe'. A single CD extended soundtrack album.
A look at Elvis' Nashville Studio B soundtrack session for 'Stay Away, Joe' from October 1967 and January 1968. FTD 118 (506020-975056)

EIN notes that a large number of these outtakes have never been released before. With 'Too Much Monkey Business' and 'U.S. Male' - plus the good humor during 30 attempts at 'Goin' Home' - there is plenty to enjoy here plus four takes of 'Dominic' (poor Elvis!).

- 'On Stage' Special double-VINYL: FTD vinyl is pleased to announce the release of 'On Stage' a Special Limited Edition 2-disc 180-gram vinyl set.
The tracklist features a selection of Elvis' February Las Vegas recordings plus the 1969 'Runaway' but doesn’t follow the track list of the original "On Stage" album. It also for some reason does not include the original "additional" 1969 track 'Yesterday'.
It is however a very interesting compilation of Elvis live in 1972 on VINYL with tracks compiled from several FTD CD releases, 'On Stage' and 'Polk Salad Annie' and 'At The International'.
• Vinyl cutting by ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS
• DMM Copper Mastering
• 180 Grams heavyweight vinyl
• Strictly limited pressing
PLEASE NOTE: All future vinyl releases will feature poly-lined plain inner bags instead of printed card. This will provide better lifetime protection.

'Summer of '61' FTD book: Despite our enthusiasm that FTD might have been expanding into the DVD market with unreleased Elvis footage this situation has now disappointingly changed.
Author of 'Summer of '61' David English has confirmed that, "I am sorry to say, that for clearance and various other reasons, there won't now be a DVD included with the Summer of '61 book/CD".
The price of the set suggested so far is £49.99 or US$80
The book includes over 200 stunning unpublished photos taken from the original negatives - see FOUR preview pages below - .

Two New FTD Books: FTD have planned two new Flaming Star book co-productions.
- 'The Best of the British - The HMV Years 1956-1958' written by Trevor Simpson. This is the story of EVERY song by Elvis released on the British HMV label. It is an eclectic mix of graphic illustrations of the labels, the charts and rare memorabilia through 1956 - 1958.
Thorough research of each song and songwriter has taken many years and provides the definitive history of the music that shook the world, sensationally revealing many previously unknown facts and British connections to Elvis and his music.
The book contains over 1000 rare and unpublished photographs, the illustrations connected to the songs, the recordings and the promotion of Elvis by HMV in Britain.
Included, and officially gathered together for the FIRST TIME on two exclusive CDs, is every Elvis track released by HMV. Most of these are, of course, the fifties master takes but also added to these are bonus songwriter demos and Elvis outtakes, including some of the 'Love Me Tender' Stereo versions. These help complete the audio story upon which the foundation of the global popular music culture and industry was built.
This is Elvis and the story of the impact of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Great Britain.

| Tuesday 1st January 2013 - - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers |
'Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite' Legacy Edition March Release: At last a Sony Legacy 40th Anniversary release announced of Elvis' two Aloha concerts. Performed at the H.I.C. Arena in Honolulu on January 14, 1973, Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite was the first, worldwide live satellite broadcast of a concert - broadcast to over 40 Nations and screened to others several weeks later. The concert debuted in the U.S. TV on NBC on April 4 and the Nielsen ratings had the show at 33.8% of homes and 51% of those watching TV - and in the Far-East, TV viewing records were broken in Japan, Philippines, Australia, Korea and Hong Kong!
On Jan 12, a full dress rehearsal took place prior to the main show. Previously issued as "The Alternate Aloha", this dress rehearsal performance makes up the first 21 tracks of Disc 2 of this Legacy Edition, which has been REMIXED and REMASTERED by Steve Rosenthal and Rob Santos. At the end of the main show on Jan 14, Elvis recorded 5 bonus songs behind closed doors for the US version of the TV show (tracks 25 to 29 Disc 2). Although previously issued, it is the first time all 5 songs have appeared in their rightful place! |

'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' FTD In-Depth Review: 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' was first released in April 1976 but only reached #41 in the charts. It only featured 10 tracks, recorded at Elvis' Graceland home among them 'Hurt', 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and 'For The Heart'.
BUT if Elvis was "Raised on Rock" then why was 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' such a middle-of-the-road quagmire of syrupy overdubs and tepid songs? This really wasn’t the album Elvis fans had been waiting for.
In hindsight we now understand more about Elvis’ depressed emotional state at the time and the difficulties involved in getting him enthusiastic enough to record at all.
But if the single ‘Hurt/For The Heart’ was supposed to be the promo for the album, then fans were surely disappointed. Even the cover pretended it was a live concert album - the Colonel must have been desperate! It is certainly one of Elvis’ worst albums.

FTD December Releases Out Now: Two new FTD CD releases are out now.
- '3000 South Paradise Road' - A two disc 7" "Classic Album" type release with 16-page booklet. It takes a closer look at Elvis’ engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in August of 1972. The main disc is the dinner concert on August 12, and the second disc is culled from the rehearsals on August 4th, the date of the opening of the engagement.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972.
A short review of '3000 Paradise Road' on FECC notes, "Great covershots, great booklet with great photos, and not one in a jumpsuit. Those "casual" (ok, not too casual) clothes Elvis wore on stage then made him look really good. The rehearsal CD is a nice experience as an eavesdropper. Sure elvis does not use his complete vocal range nor does he put a lot of power in the rehearsed songs, but still most of the songs sound good enough for his stage performance. Furthermore it is surprising to me that he did do some songs that really did not |
 |
need any rehearsal because they have been played regularly since at least the beginning of the year (1972). "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" is a good performance and the band does it well rehearsed. Elvis jokes around at the beginning of "Faded Love" but it still sounds good. The big ballads get their usual lenghty treatment and they sure meant something to him ('What Now My Love', 'My Way') although the sound is an Audience Recording it is really okay. After all, this is a piece of Elvis history that fans would loved to have witnessed.
The Concert CD truly is Full Blast. A great 1972 double." - Jambalaya FECC.
- 'Back In Memphis' - Is also released - the Classic Album double-album series first volume from the 1969 sessions in Memphis with the release of 'Back In Memphis' featuring 'Suspicious Minds' as a bonus track. FTD 115 (506020-975050) (SEE cover pictures below) |

'Prince From Another Planet’ In-Depth Review: Of all the live concert recordings released by RCA during Elvis Presley’s lifetime, none carried the historic significance of his long-awaited New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and now the two RCA recorded concerts and newly found fan-filmed video footage been released in one deluxe package for the 40th Anniversary Edition.

The '3000 South Paradise Road' new FTD: New flyers have been produced for the '3000 South Paradise Road' new August 1972 special double FTD release.
EIN has been informed that the audio from the August 12 Dinner Show soundboard has been vastly improved upon from its original 'Blazing Into The Darkness' bootleg release. Elvis was very focused and motivated at this engagement which is a surprise at his seventh Las Vegas season.
Our friend Rock Legend also reports that the rehearsal CD is pretty decent audio and better than expected.
Treats are a very relaxed ‘Blueberry Hill’, ‘My Babe’ with a very different James Burton guitar solo not heard in other versions and ‘True Love Travels On A Gravel Road’ is not the rehearsal that we know but a better version, closer to the original release.
Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos have collected some stunning and rare photos (EIN notes - Isn’t it great to see Elvis not in jumpsuit for a change!) plus tons of memorabilia and documents which make the whole package a real winner.
Don’t miss out on this one.

FTD December Releases: Three new FTD releases for December.
As with '48 Hours To Memphis' this release has been prepared by Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos, who once again has done a fabulous job of collecting information and materials for the project. There will be additional information in the next few weeks.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972. As disc 2 is captured on a personal tape recorder, the sonic quality is below standards, but historical significance more than compensates for its audio limitations. Disc 1 is a soundboard recording.
Recorded live at Vegas Hilton August 12, 1972. Dinner show. |
 |
This is a great Las Vegas dinner show from August with Elvis in a confident mood, giving excellent performances on almost every song, and enjoying being back on stage. Elvis wore a cool range of two piece suits and was up for lots of karate action and with lots of energy. Previously released as the bootleg 'Blazing Into The Darkness'.
'My Way' was new and Elvis makes a few humorous cracks about not wanting 'My Way' associated with his own personal life "...the end is near and all that jazz, I haven't even ate it up and spit it out yet, I'm still chewing on it!"
The setlist is a great selection (see below) and the sound quality is excellent. Remastered in 2012 it will be a great FTD double-pack. |
